Close binaries aren't a problem if you throttle down to refuel. I approach the main star directly, throttle down to 30km/s, refuel at about 80% of my max rate (which never causes overheating), and while I wait I disco-scan, detailed scan the main star, and if I'm lucky scan a few inner planets too.
James Dominguez At zero throttle one close binary sent my heat to 130 immediately and my panel started sparking and smoking. Alarms went off and the computer droned "Taking Heat Damage" over and over. I like your experience much better! That particular binary was so close there was just too much heat. Now I know to drop out of SC and hit my heat sink a time or two before jumping away via the escape vector.
James Dominguez It's comforting to know that its a rare thing though! Early on I was steeling myself for a white knuckled trip to Sag A. Glad it only happened the one time.
I used to do the swooping scoop thing, and it would occasionally result in overheating or panicking when I noticed a close binary too late. Since I started scooping at 30km/s, never taken heat damage once in about 8kLY.
James Dominguez I'm not doing any full speed scooping on this trip. I have come to close to the star and subsequently dropped out of SC a few times too often to be risking that now.
I did one today by accident. I throttled down on jump to a system with a "K" star. Suddenly realized I was diving fast on the star and had to dive under to avoid going into it! Not sure what happened. The throttle was at zero the whole time!
You would have loved the road I took today. Found a binary, not too close, about 10 ls, but looked impressive as I jumped over one to star before "coming to rest" near the other. Turned out a third was only 70 ls away. Made for a nice photo.
Next jump, another binary, same situation as before, jumped over one, landed in front of the other, 10 ls, all good.
Both made me get away from the stars first to ensure that they aren't too close together before going in for the scoop.
Ahhh, yes, I've heard of it happening with the X52 Pro. I have one too, but it hasn't happened to me yet. (Actually, it happened once, but it was because the plug came out.)
Last night I finally hit the jackpot, a previously undiscovered HIP system. Of course I proceeded to spend the best part of the following hour rubbing myself all over the system, hoping nobody will come across my little gem before I make my way home, which is unlikely to happen before the end of July.
CMDR Senan Torr is still struggling to make it back to Colonia. He is just over 10K from Colonia and 31K from LTT 4961 (his ultimate destination for DW2 prep). Lots to see out there though and I've made some amazing discoveries! Even found a ringed water world and an ringed HMC that fooled me into thinking it might be an ELW. I've tagged lots and lots of WW and a good number of non-ringed ELWs. Everyday holds new discoveries!

ReplyDeleteWow, that's a seriously unlucky arrival vector!

Max Acceleration - I've heard of that happening to a few people, throttle stuck on. What controller are you using?
